Retraction of Published Articles: Principles and Procedures
The retraction of published articles is an essential component in upholding academic integrity and ensuring the quality of scholarly publications. Retraction involves the official withdrawal of an article from a scientific journal, accompanied by the publication of a corresponding retraction notice. Such a decision is made by the editorial board in cases where the published information is found to be unreliable or misleading to the academic community.
Reasons for retraction may include proven instances of data fabrication or falsification, plagiarism, significant methodological errors that affect the conclusions, and violations of ethical standards in conducting research. In some cases, authors themselves initiate the retraction upon realising critical errors post-publication. Retraction may also result from duplicate publication, where the same work has been submitted to multiple journals.
Based on the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Editorial Board adheres to the following policy regarding the retraction of published articles.
Grounds for article retraction include:
The presence of unauthorised borrowing (plagiarism);
Duplicate publication in multiple journals;
Detection of fabrication or falsification in the work;
Serious errors (e.g., misinterpretation of results) that question the scientific validity of the material;
Improper authorship (inclusion of individuals who do not meet authorship criteria or omission of those who deserve authorship);
Undisclosed conflicts of interest (and other breaches of publication ethics);
Re-publication of the article without the author's consent;
Other violations of ethical publishing principles.
The decision to retract an article is made by the Academic Integrity Commission of Kherson State University based on the resolution of the editorial board. The name(s) of the author(s) and the title of the article remain in the contents of the issue on the journal's website, but information regarding the reason for retraction is provided. A decision outlining the grounds for retraction is sent to the author(s) in the case of co-authorship.
